WEE KIM WEE DISTINGUISHED JOURNALIST LECTURE 2010

Goenawan Mohamad

Journalism in an Age of Intolerance
Intolerance is one of the most powerful political forces in Asia and the world. An increasingly integrated world confronts people with difference on a daily basis. Although encounters with difference are opportunities for learning, creativity and growth, they can also be met with intolerance - sometimes spontaneous, often actively provoked by political interests. What can journalism do to help build a culture of tolerance?

The Speaker
Goenawan Mohamad is one of Asia's most respected journalists. He founded Indonesia's Tempo magazine, a beacon of independent journalism in Suharto's New Order regime. He has been a recipient of the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists, and was named International Editor of the Year by World Press Review magazine. He is also a celebrated poet.
