The FCA has invited Andrew Guthrie, Syngenta Regional Director, APAC, and Professor Paul Teng, Senior Fellow (Food Security) at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies, Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, to discuss the issue of Food Security in the APAC region.
To feed the world's growing population - expected to reach 9 billion by 2050 - the world has to increase food production by 70 percent. If this challenge is not great enough, in the developing countries, food production has to increase by 100 percent, representing a tremendous challenge: doubling food production under existing constraints such as changing climatic conditions, degradation of land, scarcity of natural resources, as well as lack of infrastructure and finance.
Syngenta and Professor Paul Teng have designed the Rice Bowl to translate the complexity of food security into an opportunity for action. The tool assesses how robust a country's capacity is to address the challenges of food security.
