The Singapore Press Club has graciously extended an invitation to FCA members to come and listen to a presenation by Hong Kong-based veteran journalist Jim Laurie on the Media Scene in China & Hong Kong. As a leading Asian economic powerhouse, China is a prolific news generator. Tremendous economic and social changes are taking place in the world's most populous country. How does the media operate in a country which has embraced a market economy but follows a socialist political system? "While covering China remains difficult and is far from free, conditions for China coverage have gradually improved,'' says Jim Laurie, a veteran journalist of 35 years who has personally witnessed developments in the Chinese media for well over a decade. Hong Kong-based Jim Laurie was till recently Vice President, Network News & Current Affairs of the STAR Group. He was responsible for STAR's first English language pan-Asia nightly news broadcast "STAR NEWS ASIA'' and the award winning current affairs programme "FOCUS ASIA''. A member of the board of governors and past president of the Foreign Correspondents Club, Hong Kong, he is the President of the International Association of Press Clubs (IAPC).
