The Regional Economic Outlook (REO) provides an assessment of the macroeconomic outlook and challenges for the region. Asia and Pacific faces new headwinds from global financial tightening and an expected slowdown of external demand. While it remains a relative bright spot in an increasingly lethargic global economy, the region is expected to expand at a rate that is well below the average rate of 5½ percent seen over the preceding two decades. The report also discusses medium-term output losses due to the pandemic, corporate debt overhang and other structural factors. It argues that a renewed structural reforms push is essential to boost potential output, highlighting the role of digitalization in boosting productivity and building resilience. There is also a growing risk of geo-economic fragmentation. Trade has been an engine of growth for Asia and the world. The rise of trade and financial fragmentation in recent years has brought concerns that this engine of growth could go into reverse, and the REO argues that the region has a lot to lose in a scenario where sharp fragmentation prevails.
